Last Friday, we received word that an elephant calf at the Woodland Park Zoo in Seattle had died that morning. We have a special connection here at Dickerson Park Zoo with this animal. Her mother, Chai, traveled to DPZ for breeding in 1998. After successfully breeding with our bull elephant, Onyx (publicly known around here as "Big Mac"), Chai returned home to Seattle and gave birth to Hansa on November 3, 2000.
Having experienced the death of elephant calves ourselves, we known how devastating this loss is for the zoo's staff and volunteers and the Seattle community as a whole. Hansa was their "little princess." If you are interested in learning more about Hansa's life, visit Woodland Park Zoo's Web site.
Our sincerest sympathies go out to our colleagues and friends in Seattle.
