Help these Bergland boys go on tour to Ireland

Six of Bergland's rugby boys were chosen to go on tour in Ireland. See more about them here.

Laerskool Bergland’s first rugby team recently took part in the Glenwood High School U13 Rugby Festival in Durban.

During this festival, only 23 out of 380 boys were chosen to go on an invitational tour to Ireland from December 1 to 10 this year, arranged by Travel and Sport – Academic & Sport Tours. Six boys of Bergland were chosen for this prestigious invitational tour: Iwan Gründlingh (lock), Freddie Welman (flanker), Steyn Lamprecht (eighth man), Dylan Duvenage (scrumhalf), Wynand Truter (centre) and Rhandzu Mkhabela (centre).

The school’s first team also won the Mpumalanga Big Schools Final in June 2022, and five of the U13 boys also played for the Pumas U13 Craven week team and won three out of four provincial games.

During the Ireland Tour they will be playing three international matches in Dublin, Limerick and Cork. Some of the main attractions they will visit during the tour are Croke Park and Aviva stadiums, Rock of Cashel and Cliffs of Moher. The boys are excited, but a bit worried about the weather as the expected maximum temperature in Ireland for these dates are 7 degree Celsius.

The estimated cost involved for the tour is R60 000. To not leave a teammate behind, the boys participated in fundraisers together such as the traditional blikskud (money tins), burger and pancake sales and a lucky draw with raffle prices. A Facebook page has been created for the boys named “Help us go on tour”. All events, fundraisers and information are shared on their Facebook page.

The next fundraiser is a golf day on September 1 at the Mbombela Golf Course. There are a few sponsored tees and fourballs available, ranging from R1 600 to R2 500. Huge prizes are on offer, such as:
? a tiger fishing trip for four people at Jozini Dam
? Maslow Times Square Hotel accommodation
      ? David Grey tickets
      ? Aeroplane flip
      ? a 12 000 BTU aircon, and many more.

Prizes are awarded from the first to 10th places, with a longest day and best lady player.

While prizes are being tallied at the golf day, there will be a short fundraiser auction that will include a framed Springbok jersey signed by the Springbok rugby team who beat New Zealand on August 6 at the Mbombela Stadium, an exclusive Mdluli Lodge accommodation/game drive for two, and two rugby balls in a glass case signed by the 2022 Airlink Pumas and Tafel Lager Griquas Currie Cup teams.

A collector’s set of the Currie Cup Final 2022 Pumas-vs-Griqua signed jerseys will be on raffle on the golf day at R100 per ticket, R160 for two or R200 for three tickets. On showcase there will also be an exclusive collection of signed and framed 2022 Currie Cup jerseys by the other five provinces, which are individually available for purchase subject to reserves being met. Ts and Cs apply.

Curro Nelspruit has also made available a whole year of school fees at 50% discount with a varying reserve price that has to be met.

To sponsor or take part in this golf day, visit the application Google form on the Help us go on tour Facebook page or contact Wendy on 082 227 8209. All funds raised go directly to the boys’ fundraiser with no agent or middleman cost. You do not have to be part of the golf day to take part in the auction – anyone is welcome to join the auction, which starts at around 18:00 in the clubhouse, or put in written bids in advance with Wendy.

A big thank you from the boys to the current sponsors and to upcoming sponsors that help to make their rugby dreams come true.
